The ongoing federal government shutdown has halted SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) funding, cutting off grocery benefits for families across Connecticut — including 817 families right here in Greenwich.
Beginning November 1, all 817 Greenwich households who rely on SNAP will lose access to their benefits due to the shutdown. Even when the government reopens, the crisis will not end — on November 30, 223 (27%) of these families will permanently lose their SNAP benefits because of new federal eligibility requirements.
For hundreds of Greenwich parents, seniors, and individuals on fixed incomes, this means the sudden loss of their primary source for groceries — just as the holiday season begins. Local food insecurity providers are already reporting record demand, and food insecurity in Greenwich is rising sharply.
Our Response
The Greenwich United Way is launching the Greenwich Fills the SNAP Gap: Emergency Food Fund to provide both immediate relief and sustained support for families impacted by the SNAP shutdown and the upcoming benefit reductions.
Funds raised will go directly to fund emergency grants for local food insecurity programs.
When federal aid pauses — and when it changes — Greenwich steps up.
