More than 650 volunteers help the Greenwich United Way mobilize the community. Our volunteers are the driving force behind the success of achieving our mission. The list of volunteer opportunities is always evolving as we engage in new initiatives that address the changing needs of the community.

Reading Champions

Reading Champions recently completed its 15th year of literacy support, helping improve reading fluency among Greenwich elementary students. A committed partner to Greenwich Public Schools, Reading Champions is the largest volunteer-driven early literacy program in town. In the 2022-2023 school year, more than 120 volunteers supported nearly 400 students with weekly one-on-one tutoring sessions. Volunteers work in all 11 Greenwich public elementary schools and four after-school programs – Greenwich Boys & Girls Club, BANC at New Lebanon School, YWCA and YMCA. Reading Champions provides volunteers with the necessary skills and preparation to provide dedicated reading support, fostering literacy skills and a love of learning in students.

Math Champions

Math Champions delivers volunteer-led math support with engaging, educational games for Kindergarten through fifth grade. Volunteers are paired with students to play interactive math games that employ key concepts until mastery. Small group math sessions are held weekly during and after school. Volunteers receive all training and materials from the Greenwich United Way. Currently, 40 Cos Cob School students are matched with 15 Math Champions volunteers from Greenwich Academy, Greenwich High School and Greenwich Public Schools parents.
