The Calling Brand Story

The Calling wines are a thoughtful collaboration between our Sonoma-based winemaking team and our esteemed family grower partners, granting us access to the best grapes in the region. Winemaker James MacPhail works directly with our growers to source grapes from iconic, sustainably farmed Sonoma vineyards. James has successfully given each of The Calling’s handcrafted Chardonnays, Pinot Noirs, and Cabernet Sauvignons a clear, singular voice, vintage after vintage.

Founded in 2012 by Jim Nantz, famed CBS sports commentator, and Peter Deutsch, CEO of Deutsch Family Wine & Spirits, The Calling wines call for effortless enjoyment with friends and loved ones. Our elegant and balanced wines reflect the down-to-earth lifestyle and natural beauty of the surrounding region. Our portfolio of twelve signature wines has proudly earned more than 55 90+ ratings from top publications since our first vintage release. We hope our wines transport you the breathtaking Sonoma County with each sip!

Peter Deutsch

Peter Deutsch joined the family wine company, W. J. Deutsch & Sons, Ltd in 1985. Working closely with his father, Bill Deutsch, Peter guided numerous burgeoning wine brands to global success. A rare blend of creative and operational strengths propelled him to CEO in 2007.

In 2012, the Deutsch’s changed their company name to “Deutsch Family Wine & Spirits” to reflect their family-to-family approach to business. Peter wanted to honor his father by creating a wine bearing the Deutsch family name, as a tribute to the impact his father has had on his life.

James MacPhail

James has deep family roots in Sonoma County and a long history of producing critically acclaimed wines of tremendous character. Encouraged by his father, MacPhail pursued his calling to become a winemaker in the mid-1990s, mentored by a some of Sonoma County’s most venerable winemakers and growers. Through this experience, he honed his craft focusing on Pinot Noir sourced from the Sonoma Coast and Anderson Valley.

Since 2002, James has produced over 100 different Pinots and Chardonnays with 90+ point scores making him one of only a few members of the 90+/90+ Club in Sonoma County. He’s given each of The Calling Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays a clear, singular voice, vintage after vintage.
